Local Website Optimization Needs Phone Numbers
In a 2009 survey a staggering 50% of small businesses didn't have a website. With this modern age of internet shopping and mobile browsing it's hard to believe.
But more shocking indeed is that only 13% of local websites have their contact phone number on their homepage.
The Purpose of Website Optimization
The logic behind local website optimization is twofold: you want to be found by search engines and you want to be understood by human readers.
If you go to all the work of capturing the searcher through SEO (search engine optimization) and fail to incite them to action once they arrive at your site, your efforts are in vain.
In fact, I would take it further and suggest not only should you have your phone number in the header of your home page (and every page) or in a contact info widget style section in the footer, but I encourage you to consider including the phone number in important title tags, or at a minimum in the meta description of some of your pages.
Helpful for Searchers
When a searcher looks for your product or service on Google, you are competing with many other providers wanting the same new customer. They are looking for the most convincing description of what they want. As they scroll down the search engine results page, they see your organic listing and behold, there it is a great summary that includes the phone number. Easy!
As a visitor, I don't even have to go to your website; I can simply call you right now and ask my qualifying questions.
Other Calls to Action
Maybe you don't want your optimized website visitors to call you on the phone. Perhaps your call to action is for them to fill out your survey, download your ebook or email you. Whatever you want, ask them to do it. And make it so simple a 5 year old can understand the command.

For optimal results to your local website optimization insure that you use your header space if possible as your sales agent. Don't put everyone else's ad there unless you have nothing you want them to do. The right hand corner of the top header part of your website is prime location for a call to action.
